Scanning the Future Munich’s Orbem Secures Major Funding to Transform Biological Analysis

In a world increasingly pressured to produce food more sustainably and with greater transparency, a Munich based deeptech company is redefining what is possible at the intersection of biology and advanced imaging. Orbem, known for pioneering the use of artificial intelligence combined with magnetic resonance imaging for large scale biological analysis, has secured a substantial new investment to accelerate its global impact.

A Significant Series B Round

Orbem has closed a fifty five point five million euro Series B financing round led by Innovation Industries, with participation from Supernova Invest. Existing investors including General Catalyst, 83North, The Venture Collective, Possible Ventures and several angel backers also contributed, reinforcing their confidence in the company’s vision and expanding commercial traction.

This new funding marks an important milestone as Orbem prepares to scale internationally and diversify its applications across agriculture, food systems and health.

AI Enabled MRI at Industrial Scale

Founded with the mission to unlock biological data through advanced imaging, Orbem has created a platform that applies artificial intelligence to industrialise MRI technology. Traditionally used in healthcare settings for detailed human imaging, MRI has been too slow and costly for industrial use. Orbem has changed this by creating non invasive, rapid scanning systems that generate precise biological insights in seconds.

This allows industries to capture information about living systems that was previously inaccessible, such as the sex of an embryo inside an egg, the viability of seeds or the quality of produce without physically damaging it.

Transforming the Poultry Industry

One of Orbem’s most successful commercial applications is in poultry production. Its flagship system, Genus Focus, uses AI powered MRI to determine the sex of a poultry egg without cracking it open. The process takes less than one second per egg and provides hatcheries with a humane and efficient alternative to the long criticised practice of culling male chicks.

Genus Focus has already been used to scan more than one hundred seventy million eggs. Its adoption is rising rapidly, especially in the European Union where new regulations and consumer expectations are driving demand for non invasive, ethical solutions.

Expanding Capabilities with Genus Scale

Building on the success of Genus Focus, Orbem recently launched Genus Scale, a new solution designed to assess egg fertilisation status before incubation. This early detection system enables hatcheries to reduce energy waste, minimise inefficiencies and ensure that non viable eggs are redirected for food production instead of being incubated.

Together, the two systems demonstrate how biological imaging can transform supply chains by enhancing efficiency, sustainability and data driven decision making.

New Markets and New Applications

The latest funding round will support Orbem’s expansion into the United States where demand for both ethical and efficient agricultural technologies is rising. The company also plans to scale its poultry operations globally and extend its capabilities into fruit and vegetable production through non destructive quality analysis.

Beyond agriculture, Orbem intends to advance healthcare applications by leveraging the vast biological data generated through its imaging platforms. These developments aim to open new opportunities for diagnostics, research and personalised treatment approaches.

With AI and MRI combined at industrial speed, Orbem is building tools that unlock biological information at an unprecedented scale.
