In the global push to cut emissions, one of the toughest challenges lies not in electricity but in heat. Industrial processes rely heavily on high temperature heat, much of which is still generated using fossil fuels. TheStorage is tackling this overlooked problem with an innovative approach, securing €3.6 million in seed funding to scale its thermal energy storage technology.

Fresh Capital to Accelerate Growth

The funding round was led by Voima Ventures, with continued support from Superhero Capital and 2C Ventures, alongside new investor Momentum.

This investment will enable TheStorage to accelerate the commercialisation of its solution, expand its team, and further refine its technology as demand for sustainable industrial energy systems continues to grow.

The Challenge of Industrial Heat

Industrial heat production remains one of the most emissions intensive sectors globally. Despite advances in renewable energy, most industrial facilities still depend on fossil fuels to generate the heat required for manufacturing processes.

At the same time, energy markets are becoming increasingly volatile, and companies are under pressure to reduce both costs and carbon emissions. This combination of factors is driving the need for flexible and efficient alternatives that can integrate renewable energy into industrial operations.

Storing Energy in Sand

TheStorage has developed a thermal energy storage system that uses sand as a medium to store heat. Excess energy, particularly from renewable sources, can be stored in the system and released when needed to power industrial processes.

This approach allows companies to decouple energy consumption from energy generation, making it easier to manage fluctuations in supply and demand. By storing energy during periods of low cost or high renewable output, businesses can optimise their energy usage and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Enabling a Flexible Energy Future

One of the key advantages of TheStorage’s technology is its ability to support the integration of renewable energy. Since renewable sources such as wind and solar are inherently intermittent, storing energy is essential for ensuring a stable and reliable supply.

The system also enables companies to respond to changes in electricity prices, using stored energy when costs are high and storing it when prices are low. This flexibility not only reduces operational expenses but also enhances resilience in a rapidly changing energy landscape.

Additional Value Through Grid Participation

Beyond cost savings and emissions reduction, TheStorage’s solution opens up new opportunities for industrial operators. By participating in grid balancing markets, companies can generate additional revenue while contributing to the stability of the energy system.

This dual benefit makes the technology particularly attractive for businesses looking to optimise both their financial performance and sustainability efforts.

Seamless Integration into Existing Operations

The system is designed to integrate smoothly into existing industrial processes, delivering high efficiency in heat transfer without disrupting operations. This ensures that companies can adopt the technology without compromising productivity or performance.

By offering a practical and scalable solution, TheStorage is addressing a critical barrier to decarbonisation in heavy industry.

Scaling for Global Impact

With the new funding, TheStorage aims to expand its reach and establish itself as a leading provider of thermal energy storage solutions. The company is focused on helping industries transition to low carbon energy systems while maintaining competitiveness in global markets.

As the demand for sustainable and cost effective energy solutions continues to rise, technologies like TheStorage’s are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of industrial energy.

A New Path to Decarbonisation

By turning a simple material like sand into a powerful energy storage medium, TheStorage is redefining how industrial heat can be generated and managed. Its approach offers a practical pathway for industries to reduce emissions, lower costs, and adapt to a more sustainable energy future.
