From Pixels to Progress: Duolingo Acquires Animade

Learning a new language is no longer just about lessons, exercises and vocabulary. For Duolingo, the experience is increasingly shaped by character, animation, humour and the small visual interactions that keep users coming back. The mobile learning company is strengthening that creative engine by acquiring London based animation and motion design studio Animade, bringing a team known for expressive digital experiences into its growing design organisation.

Animade Joins Duolingo

Duolingo has acquired Animade, a London studio specialising in animation, motion design and interactive experiences.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Founded in London, Animade has developed an international reputation for combining animation, technology and design to create distinctive digital experiences for leading technology companies and global brands.

Following the acquisition, the Animade team will join Duolingo’s Design Studio.

The move is expected to increase Duolingo’s internal creative capacity as the company continues developing its products, testing new growth ideas and experimenting with new forms of digital interaction.

Strengthening Product Design

For Duolingo, motion design has become an increasingly important component of its learning experience.

The company’s products rely heavily on visual feedback, animations and character driven interactions to make lessons more engaging and understandable.

Rather than treating animation simply as decoration, Duolingo sees motion as part of how learners navigate the product, understand concepts and remain motivated to continue learning.

The addition of Animade gives Duolingo access to a team with deep expertise in creating motion systems and interactive experiences.

The studio’s experience is expected to complement Duolingo’s existing design capabilities while giving the company additional resources for product development and experimentation.

A Shared Creative Philosophy

The acquisition also reflects similarities between the two companies’ approach to design.

Animade has built its reputation around creating expressive digital experiences that make technology feel more human. Its work combines animation, storytelling and interaction to give products a stronger personality.

That philosophy closely matches Duolingo’s own brand, which has become known for its distinctive characters, playful visual language and highly recognisable product experience.

Jen Judd, co founder of Animade, said the studio’s mission has always been to share joy through thoughtful design and animation.

She described Duolingo as a natural place for the team to continue that mission, highlighting the company’s focus on creativity, craftsmanship and technology that can create positive emotional experiences.

Investing in UK Talent

The acquisition also expands Duolingo’s creative presence in the United Kingdom.

Animade’s London team will remain an important addition to the company’s international design capabilities, giving Duolingo access to experienced animation and motion specialists in one of Europe’s major creative and technology hubs.

The company said the deal reinforces its continued investment in world class talent.

For Animade, joining Duolingo provides an opportunity to apply its creative expertise to a global consumer product used by millions of people.

Motion as a Learning Tool

Duolingo’s design leadership believes the way a product makes people feel can be as important as the functionality it provides.

Mig Reyes, Head of Design at Duolingo, said motion design has become a core part of the company’s approach to helping learners understand, enjoy and return to the platform.

The acquisition therefore goes beyond adding a creative agency to Duolingo’s operations. The Animade team will become part of the company’s internal design organisation and contribute directly to product development.

Building More Engaging Experiences

As competition grows across mobile learning and consumer technology, companies are increasingly looking for ways to differentiate through user experience rather than functionality alone.

Duolingo has built much of its identity around making learning feel accessible and entertaining. Bringing Animade into the business could help deepen that approach through more sophisticated animation, interaction and product storytelling.

The acquisition gives Duolingo another creative capability as it explores new product ideas and growth initiatives, while giving Animade a larger platform to apply its design expertise.

Together, the companies are betting that thoughtful animation and personality can make digital learning not only easier to understand, but also more enjoyable to return to every day.
