One Chip, Dozens of Wavelengths: Solinide’s €4M Bet on Faster AI Networks

As AI systems become more powerful, the challenge is no longer only about building faster processors. Moving enormous volumes of data between those processors is becoming a critical bottleneck, with conventional optical connections consuming more energy, space and hardware. Swedish deeptech startup Solinide Photonics is targeting that problem with silicon nitride photonic technology designed to move more data through optical networks while using fewer laser sources.

€4 Million to Scale Photonic Technology

Solinide Photonics has raised €4 million in seed funding to commercialise its photonic integrated circuit technology and prepare for scalable manufacturing.

The funding round was co led by Navigare Ventures and PSV Hafnium, with participation from Chalmers Ventures, Turbine Capital, Norrsken Evolve and Almi Greentech Fund.

The investment will allow Solinide to move beyond technology development and focus on commercialisation, manufacturing preparation and customer deployment.

The company plans to expand its engineering and commercial teams, strengthen its internal prototyping capabilities and prepare its technology for European manufacturing.

Tackling AI’s Data Movement Problem

Founded as a spin out from Chalmers University of Technology, Solinide develops photonic chips and microcomb technology for optical interconnects.

The company is focused on a growing problem inside modern AI data centres. As processors become increasingly powerful, the amount of information that needs to move between chips is also rising rapidly.

That creates a challenge for data centre operators because increasing bandwidth can also increase energy consumption, cost and the physical footprint of networking equipment.

Optical communication is already widely used to move data across modern computing infrastructure. However, conventional optical systems can require multiple individual lasers to transmit information across different wavelengths.

Solinide is developing an alternative approach.

One Chip, Multiple Wavelengths

At the heart of Solinide’s technology is its microcomb platform, which can generate dozens of precisely controlled wavelengths of light from a single chip.

Instead of relying on multiple separate laser sources, the company’s technology is designed to create multiple optical channels simultaneously.

Those wavelengths can then be used to carry more information through each optical fibre.

The approach could reduce the number of components required for optical interconnects while lowering power consumption, cost and physical size.

That makes the technology particularly relevant as data centres expand their AI infrastructure and require increasingly high capacity connections between processors, memory and other computing hardware.

From Research to Commercial Product

Solinide’s technology sits at the intersection of photonics, semiconductor engineering, AI infrastructure and energy efficiency.

The company believes its technology could eventually serve applications beyond AI data centres, including telecommunications and other markets where large quantities of information need to be transmitted rapidly and efficiently.

Solinide says its microcomb technology has already demonstrated the performance required for data centre links and has been integrated into a rack mounted system.

The company is now shifting its attention towards commercial readiness and real world deployment.

CEO Marcello Girardo said the company had demonstrated the performance required for data centre connections and developed an integrated rack mounted product. The next priority is preparing for commercial launch and deployment.

Preparing for European Manufacturing

The latest funding marks an important step in Solinide’s transition from deeptech development towards commercialisation.

The company intends to strengthen its engineering capabilities while expanding its commercial organisation and building greater in house prototyping capacity.

A major focus will also be preparing the technology for scalable manufacturing in Europe.

Solinide plans to deepen relationships with strategic industry partners as it works towards market adoption.

With AI data centre capacity expanding rapidly, the company is betting that the next generation of computing infrastructure will need not only faster chips but also more efficient ways to move data between them. Its photonic technology aims to provide that missing link while reducing the energy and hardware burden of high speed optical communication.
