Arkadia Space Lands €14.5M to Replace Toxic Rocket Fuels with Green Propulsion Breakthrough

Spanish aerospace innovator Arkadia Space is accelerating Europe’s push toward sustainable space technologies after securing €14.5 million in funding through the European Innovation Council Accelerator. The funding not only strengthens the company’s financial position but also signals strong institutional confidence in its next generation green propulsion systems designed to replace toxic fuels in space missions.

Backing from Europe’s Innovation Engine

The funding package includes a €2.5 million grant along with €6 million in equity from the European Innovation Council Fund, complemented by €6 million in private investment. This combination of public and private support highlights the strategic importance of Arkadia’s technology for Europe’s space ambitions.

The endorsement from the European Commission reflects a broader commitment to advancing critical and sustainable space technologies while reducing reliance on hazardous materials traditionally used in propulsion systems.

A Cleaner Alternative to Toxic Propellants

Arkadia Space is developing a hypergolic bipropellant propulsion system that uses high concentration hydrogen peroxide paired with a proprietary green fuel. This system is designed to replace hydrazine and its derivatives, which are widely used in spacecraft propulsion but are highly toxic and increasingly restricted under European regulations.

By offering a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative, Arkadia aims to redefine propulsion standards for satellites and deep space missions. The company’s approach aligns with growing global efforts to make space exploration more sustainable without compromising performance.

High Performance with Greater Reliability

One of the defining features of Arkadia’s propulsion system is its hypergolic nature, meaning the propellants ignite instantly upon contact. This eliminates the need for complex ignition systems, reducing both technical complexity and potential points of failure.

The result is a more reliable and precise propulsion solution, particularly valuable for critical operations such as spacecraft docking and lunar landings. In addition to performance improvements, the system is expected to reduce operational and refuelling costs by more than 60 percent compared to conventional technologies.

Proven Success in Orbit

Arkadia’s progress has already moved beyond the laboratory. The company achieved a major milestone with the in orbit validation of its DARK propulsion system, which was launched in March 2025 aboard a satellite operated by D-Orbit during a mission conducted by SpaceX.

This marked the first time a hydrogen peroxide based propulsion system reached space in Europe, demonstrating the viability of Arkadia’s technology under real mission conditions. The successful deployment strengthens the company’s position as a pioneer in green propulsion.

Leadership Vision and Market Readiness

According to co founder and CEO Francho García, the funding comes at a pivotal moment for the company. Over the past year, Arkadia has demonstrated that its technology not only meets market requirements but also offers a credible and competitive alternative to traditional fuels.

He emphasised that the recognition from European institutions validates the company’s direction and provides momentum to accelerate commercialisation, with plans to bring the technology to market as early as next year.

Scaling Technology and Commercial Operations

The newly secured funding will be used to advance research and development, expand testing infrastructure, and scale Arkadia’s commercial operations. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the company can meet growing demand from satellite operators and space agencies seeking safer and more efficient propulsion solutions.

As Europe continues to strengthen its position in the global space industry, technologies like those developed by Arkadia are expected to play a crucial role in enabling future missions while adhering to stricter environmental and safety standards.
