From daily traffic jams to delayed buses and disruptive roadworks, transport problems often reflect decisions made long before commuters begin their journeys. UK startup Alchera Technologies is using artificial intelligence to help public authorities understand how roads and public transport networks perform, identify problems faster and make infrastructure decisions based on better evidence. The Cambridge founded company has raised £2.7 million in seed funding to support the next stage of its growth.
The funding round was led by Maven Capital Partners through the British Business Bank’s South West Investment Fund, which contributed £2 million. Other participants included the Baves Entrepreneurship Fund, The FSE Group and Innovate UK’s Investor Partnership programme. Existing investor Cambridge Applied Research also took part in the round.
Turning Transport Data Into Decisions
Founded in 2016, Alchera Technologies develops AI and data solutions for local authorities, highways operators and transport consultants. Its platform brings together information from multiple transport and contextual data sources to help organisations understand how their networks are performing and determine where improvements are needed.
Transport authorities often have access to large amounts of information, but the data can be spread across separate systems, teams and formats. Analysing it manually can take considerable time, delaying decisions about road maintenance, bus routes, traffic management and infrastructure investment.
Alchera aims to address this challenge by combining these fragmented datasets and applying proprietary machine learning techniques. According to the company, its technology can reduce the time required to analyse transport data from weeks to seconds, allowing decision makers to assess network performance more quickly.
Helping Cities Plan Better Roads and Bus Services
The platform is designed to support decisions across road and public transport networks. By providing a more integrated view of transport conditions, it can help authorities examine how different parts of a network operate and identify areas that may require attention.
For highways operators, better analysis can inform infrastructure planning, roadworks coordination and network management. For public transport planners, data driven insights can support the evaluation of bus services and help authorities understand how transport networks meet the needs of communities.
The broader objective is to replace decisions based on incomplete information with analysis that considers a wider range of available evidence. This can be important when public authorities must balance limited budgets, rising travel demand and the need to maintain reliable infrastructure.
Existing Work With Local Authorities
Alchera Technologies already works with public sector organisations and road infrastructure operators. Its customers include Lancashire County Council and City of York Council, reflecting the relevance of its technology to local transport planning and network management.
Co founder and CEO Anna Jordan has highlighted how decisions about roads and bus routes affect everyday journeys, including travel to work, school and appointments. She has said that transport data often exists but remains difficult to bring together, forcing organisations to make decisions without a complete picture.
According to Jordan, combining this information can help authorities reduce disruption from roadworks and develop more reliable and resilient transport networks. Better planning could also support affordability for road users and public transport passengers, although results depend on how authorities apply the insights.
Funding the Next Phase of Growth
The £2.7 million investment gives Alchera additional capital to advance its technology and expand its work with organisations responsible for transport infrastructure. The participation of Maven Capital Partners through the South West Investment Fund also connects the round with a UK investment programme designed to improve access to finance for smaller businesses.
As cities face pressure to improve transport reliability while managing constrained public budgets, tools that make complex data easier to use are becoming increasingly relevant. Alchera’s approach focuses on helping decision makers understand existing networks before committing to changes or new infrastructure.
Building More Reliable Transport Networks
Alchera Technologies operates at the intersection of AI, data analytics and public infrastructure. Its challenge now is to turn faster analysis into practical improvements across more transport networks.
By bringing scattered information into a common analytical view, the company aims to help authorities make more informed decisions about roads and public transport, with the potential to reduce disruption and improve the everyday journeys on which communities depend.
