Spiral Hydrogen Secures €2.7M to Spin Away Bubbles and Supercharge Green Hydrogen Efficiency

Estonian Dutch deeptech startup Spiral Hydrogen has secured €2.7 million in pre seed funding, alongside €0.7 million in grants, to advance a new approach to hydrogen production that could significantly improve efficiency and reduce costs. The company is tackling one of the most persistent technical challenges in electrolysis, aiming to unlock the full commercial potential of green hydrogen.

Backing for a Breakthrough Approach

The funding round was supported by byFounders, Norrsken Evolve, and Superangel. This early stage backing reflects growing investor interest in technologies that can accelerate the transition to sustainable energy systems.

The capital will be used to move Spiral Hydrogen’s technology from laboratory development toward real world deployment, marking a critical step in its commercialisation journey.

Rethinking Electrolysis Efficiency

Green hydrogen is widely seen as a key component of future energy systems, particularly for industries that are difficult to decarbonise. However, current electrolysis methods face efficiency limitations that increase costs and slow adoption.

A major issue in conventional systems is the formation of gas bubbles on electrodes during the electrolysis process. These bubbles interfere with the reaction, reducing efficiency and leading to energy losses.

Spiral Hydrogen is addressing this problem through a novel design that eliminates bubble formation within the reaction zone. By doing so, the company aims to achieve significantly higher efficiency levels compared to traditional systems.

A Bubble Free Electrolyser

Founded by Juri Volodin and Fedor Stomakhin, the company combines expertise in electrochemistry, energy systems, and software engineering.

Its solution is a rotating electrolyser that routes gases through a porous electrode into a separate channel, preventing bubbles from forming on the electrode surface. This design enables more efficient reactions and allows the system to reach efficiency levels above 90 percent.

By improving energy utilisation, the technology has the potential to lower both capital and operating costs, making green hydrogen more competitive with conventional fossil based alternatives.

From Lab to Real World Deployment

The next phase of development will focus on building a pilot electrolyser at the Port of Rotterdam in partnership with SwitcH2. The pilot project is expected to be completed within the next two years and will serve as a key milestone in validating the technology under industrial conditions.

This deployment will provide valuable data on performance, scalability, and integration into existing energy systems, helping to inform the design of a future commercial unit.

Unlocking Green Hydrogen Potential

Improving the efficiency of hydrogen production is critical for scaling its use across industries such as refining, fertiliser production, steel manufacturing, and heavy transport. These sectors require large amounts of energy and are among the most challenging to decarbonise.

By reducing energy losses and lowering costs, Spiral Hydrogen’s technology could make green hydrogen a more viable alternative, supporting broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
