For millions of patients, the most stressful part of a medical appointment often begins after leaving the doctor’s office. Important details can be forgotten, complex terminology may remain unclear, and family members are frequently left out of crucial conversations. Dutch healthtech startup Ditto is aiming to change that experience with artificial intelligence, and investors are backing its vision with fresh capital to accelerate growth across Europe.
The company has raised €7.6 million in a new funding round led by Heal Capital, with participation from Optiverder and Rubio Impact Ventures. The funding will support Ditto’s European expansion plans and help the company further develop its AI powered patient communication platform, which has already gained rapid traction since its launch last summer.
Tackling a Common Healthcare Problem
Ditto was founded by Tobias Polak, Bart Voorn, and Merlijn van Breugel with the goal of solving one of healthcare’s most overlooked challenges: patients often struggle to fully understand or remember what was discussed during medical consultations.
Medical appointments are typically short and emotionally intense, particularly when patients are receiving difficult diagnoses or discussing long term treatment plans. In many cases, people leave consultations with unanswered questions or confusion about next steps. Ditto’s founders believe technology can help bridge that communication gap while giving patients more control over their healthcare journey.
According to the company, nearly 100,000 users have already downloaded the app within months of its launch, reflecting growing demand for tools that improve communication and accessibility in healthcare settings.
How the Platform Works
Ditto’s platform allows users to record medical consultations directly through the app or upload photographs of medical documents and letters. The AI system then processes the information and generates clear summaries that patients can revisit at any time.
One of the platform’s key features is its ability to simplify complex medical language into more understandable explanations. The summaries can also be translated into multiple languages, including English, Turkish, and Arabic, helping patients from different backgrounds better understand their treatment and care instructions.
The company has also built features that allow users to securely share summaries with family members or caregivers, enabling loved ones to stay informed and participate more actively in the care process. Ditto emphasises that privacy remains central to the platform’s design and states that no patient data is stored centrally.
Tobias Polak said healthcare systems have traditionally been designed around institutions rather than around the patient experience itself. He explained that consultations are often overwhelming for patients, especially during vulnerable moments when emotions and stress can affect memory and comprehension.
The company’s broader ambition is to help people feel more informed, confident, and supported throughout their healthcare journey, from diagnosis to treatment and recovery.
Reducing Pressure on Healthcare Professionals
Beyond improving the patient experience, Ditto believes its technology can also reduce administrative strain on healthcare providers. By helping patients better understand what was discussed during appointments, the platform may lower the number of repetitive follow up questions and reduce communication inefficiencies within healthcare systems.
The startup sees this as particularly important as hospitals and clinics across Europe continue to face increasing workloads, staffing shortages, and rising pressure to improve patient engagement.
Expansion Plans Across Europe
With the newly secured funding, Ditto plans to expand its presence across European markets while continuing to invest in product development. The company is already working on additional support tools designed to help patients prepare for consultations, organise treatment information, and navigate complex care journeys together with family members.
As healthcare providers increasingly explore digital solutions that improve both efficiency and patient outcomes, Ditto is positioning itself as part of a new generation of AI driven healthtech platforms focused on making medical communication more human, accessible, and understandable.
