AI Leaves the Office: Flip Raises $25M for the Frontline Workforce

While artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming part of everyday office work, millions of employees on factory floors, in shops, warehouses, hotels and care facilities remain largely disconnected from the digital tools powering that transformation. German employee experience company Flip is targeting that gap after raising $25 million in new funding to expand its AI powered platform for frontline workers.

Closing the frontline AI gap

The round saw existing investors Notion Capital and HV Capital increase their stakes, while L Bank, the development bank of Baden Württemberg, joined as a new investor alongside business angels and institutional investors.

Founded in 2018, Flip is building a workplace platform specifically for employees who often lack access to corporate computers, email accounts or traditional enterprise software. Its technology combines communication, workflows, digital identity and AI capabilities in a single mobile focused environment.

Designed for deskless employees

Frontline workers represent a significant part of the global workforce, but their technology experience can differ sharply from that of office employees.

Workers in manufacturing, retail, logistics, hospitality and care frequently rely on shared devices, personal smartphones or physical processes to access workplace information. This can make it difficult for companies to roll out the same digital and AI tools used by employees working behind desks.

Flip aims to provide a digital entry point that does not depend on a conventional corporate email address or computer.

Its platform enables organisations to communicate with employees, distribute information, manage workflows and provide access to workplace applications through a unified environment.

The company argues that creating this underlying digital infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as businesses look to introduce AI into frontline operations.

Fusion brings custom apps to the frontline

One of Flip’s key products is Fusion, which is designed to help organisations create customised applications for specific frontline teams, locations and operational processes.

Instead of requiring businesses to buy and configure separate software for every use case, Fusion can generate applications tailored to particular operational requirements.

That could allow a retailer, for example, to build tools around individual stores or processes, while manufacturers could create applications designed around specific production environments.

The approach is intended to make software more adaptable to the realities of frontline work, where workflows can vary significantly between teams and locations.

Building a digital identity layer

Flip is also developing Frontline Identity, which addresses another fundamental challenge facing deskless employees: access.

Traditional enterprise software frequently assumes that every employee has a corporate email address and a permanent digital identity within the organisation. That assumption does not always hold true for frontline workers.

Frontline Identity is designed to give these employees a secure way to access workplace applications without requiring a corporate email account.

By creating a digital identity layer, Flip aims to make it easier for frontline employees to use company systems as well as emerging AI tools.

Preparing frontline teams for AI

Flip sees the combination of identity, applications and AI agents as a foundation for bringing artificial intelligence into frontline environments.

The company believes AI could eventually support employees with operational questions, workflows, information retrieval and other tasks, but access to the necessary digital infrastructure needs to come first.

The new $25 million investment will therefore be used to continue developing Flip’s platform and expand its capabilities for frontline organisations.

The company’s broader ambition is to ensure that the shift toward AI does not create another divide between office based employees and the people operating businesses on the ground.

By putting communication, digital identity, customised applications and AI into one platform, Flip is positioning itself as part of the infrastructure needed to bring the next wave of workplace technology beyond the desk.
