Beyond the Swipe: How Taimi Is Building a More Inclusive Dating Economy

For Jake Vygnan and his co founders, building a dating company was never simply about creating another place to swipe. Their first idea was more ambitious: create a digital home for the entire LGBTQ+ community. That vision eventually became Taimi, an inclusive dating and social platform that now serves people across a broad spectrum of sexual orientations, gender identities and relationship preferences.

From Two Dating Apps to a Clearer Mission

Taimi was launched in 2017 alongside Hily, another dating product developed by Ukrainian product company appflame. While Hily focuses on the broader dating market, Taimi was built around LGBTQ+ users.

The founders initially tried to turn Taimi into something much larger than a dating service, combining dating with communication, knowledge sharing and community support. Vygnan later acknowledged that the approach became too broad.

The company eventually returned to its original dating focus. That decision gave the team a clearer product strategy and a more defined problem to solve: creating an inclusive platform where LGBTQ+ users could meet people who fit their identities, preferences and expectations.

Today, Taimi describes itself as an inclusive LGBTQ+ dating platform designed to accommodate the diversity of queer experiences. Its official platform highlights features such as identity and pronoun information, compatibility tools and private content sharing.

Building for the Entire LGBTQ+ Spectrum

One of Taimi’s biggest challenges is also one of its defining characteristics. Rather than concentrating on a single segment of the LGBTQ+ community, the platform attempts to accommodate many different combinations of identities and orientations.

That creates additional complexity for its recommendation and matching systems. Users are not simply divided into two broad groups. The platform needs to understand different communities and the types of relationships and connections people are seeking.

Taimi says it has millions of users worldwide and positions itself as a community as well as a dating product.

Safety Becomes a Core Product Feature

For an LGBTQ+ dating platform, safety and privacy are particularly important. Taimi has built multiple controls around this requirement.

Its Taimi Protect system includes biometric security, passcode protection, Stealth Mode and controls that allow users to hide information such as their location, age, gender and sexuality. Verified accounts receive a verification badge, while users can report suspicious profiles directly to the platform.

The company also operates moderation and live support services around the clock. Its community rules prohibit harassment, cyberbullying, discrimination, hate speech and other harmful behaviour.

Taimi also provides screenshot protection for profiles, designed to reduce risks including harassment and unwanted exposure.

Turning Employees Into Founders

Beyond Taimi and Hily, appflame is developing a broader strategy for creating new consumer businesses.

Its Ignite initiative encourages employees and small internal teams to develop and launch new products. The company says it is focused on identifying entrepreneurial talent internally and giving people the opportunity to build businesses of their own.

That approach reflects appflame’s broader ambition to create multiple technology products rather than depend on a single application. The company currently lists Taimi, Hily and other products within its portfolio and says it has more than 500 specialists worldwide.

A Ukrainian Company With Global Ambitions

The company’s Ukrainian roots remain central to its identity. While operating during wartime has created additional challenges, appflame has also expanded its involvement in initiatives supporting Ukraine.

The appflame Foundation has supported military education, humanitarian initiatives and prosthetics related projects, while the company continues to employ and support staff serving in Ukraine’s defence forces.

Chasing the Next Major Milestone

Taimi’s long term ambitions remain firmly focused on growth. The company is concentrating heavily on the US market, where competition among dating platforms is intense.

Vygnan’s stated goal is to build Taimi into a business mature enough to be IPO ready, while targeting two million daily active users. The company currently remains well below that ambition, making continued user acquisition and engagement the central challenge.

Yet the founders believe dating retains one advantage in the age of artificial intelligence: the end product is still fundamentally human connection.

AI can influence discovery, recommendations and matching, but it cannot replace the person users ultimately want to meet. For Taimi, that human element could remain its strongest defence as the dating industry enters its next technological phase.
