Pixel-Flo Secures Seed Funding to Advance MicroLED Manufacturing Technology

MicroLED technology is widely regarded as one of the most promising advances in display innovation, offering significant improvements in brightness, energy efficiency, durability, and image quality compared with conventional display technologies. UK deeptech startup Pixel-Flo is developing technology to solve this challenge, and the company has now secured fresh funding to accelerate industrial scale deployment.

Pixel-Flo has raised £5.25 million in seed funding in a round led by Northern Gritstone, with participation from SCVC, the Parkwalk Northern Universities Venture Fund, and German investment firm HTGF.

The investment will support technology development, manufacturing scale up, international expansion, and continued growth of the company’s engineering team.

Commercialising University Research

Founded by Dr Rick Smith, Dr Suneal Ghataora, and Simon Jones, Pixel-Flo is a spin out from the University of Sheffield.

The company builds on research carried out within the University’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, combining expertise in semiconductor photonics with extensive experience from the global display industry.

Its goal is to commercialise manufacturing technologies capable of overcoming one of the most significant obstacles limiting widespread adoption of MicroLED displays.

The company believes improvements in production efficiency will unlock broader commercial opportunities across multiple industries.

Addressing the Manufacturing Challenge

MicroLED displays offer numerous technical advantages, including higher brightness, lower power consumption, longer operating life, and improved visual performance.

However, manufacturing these displays requires accurately positioning enormous numbers of microscopic LEDs onto display substrates.

Traditional manufacturing approaches remain costly, time consuming, and difficult to scale for high volume production.

Pixel-Flo has focused its research on developing alternative manufacturing processes capable of delivering greater efficiency while maintaining production quality.

The company believes solving this manufacturing bottleneck is essential for accelerating industry adoption.

Continuous Flow Mass Transfer Technology

At the centre of Pixel-Flo’s platform is its proprietary Continuous Flow Mass Transfer process.

The technology is based on fluidic self assembly, a manufacturing approach that uses carefully controlled fluid dynamics to position microscopic components accurately during production.

By automating this complex assembly process, the company aims to increase manufacturing throughput while reducing processing costs and material consumption.

The platform has been designed to support a broad range of MicroLED display applications across different industries and product categories.
