The global shipping industry is under growing pressure to reduce emissions and transition toward cleaner energy sources. As regulators tighten environmental standards and shipping companies seek practical pathways to decarbonisation, demand is increasing for alternative fuels that can be adopted without requiring extensive modifications to vessels or infrastructure. While numerous solutions are being explored, scalability and compatibility remain major challenges. Danish biofuel innovator Kvasir Technologies believes it has developed a solution capable of addressing both issues, and the company has now secured significant funding to accelerate commercial deployment.

Kvasir Technologies has raised €10 million in a Series A funding round with participation from European Energy, EIFO, Mærsk Growth, and Footprint Fund. Alongside the investment, the company has entered into a strategic partnership with European Energy to establish KVEEN Biofuels, a new venture dedicated to developing a commercial scale biofuel production facility based on Kvasir Technologies’ proprietary technology.

The funding marks an important milestone in the company’s efforts to bring renewable marine fuels to industrial scale production.

Transforming Agricultural and Forestry Residues

Kvasir Technologies emerged from research conducted at the Technical University of Denmark and was founded with the objective of creating sustainable alternatives to fossil based fuels.

The company focuses on converting non edible lignin rich residues from agriculture and forestry into advanced biofuels.

Lignin is one of the most abundant organic materials in nature and is commonly found in plant biomass. Despite its availability, it has historically been underutilised in large scale fuel production.

Kvasir’s technology unlocks the energy potential of this resource by transforming agricultural and forestry byproducts into refined fuels suitable for commercial use.

This approach creates value from waste streams while avoiding competition with food production, an important consideration in the development of sustainable energy solutions.

A Direct Alternative to Conventional Marine Fuels

One of the most significant advantages of the company’s technology is its compatibility with existing maritime infrastructure.

Many alternative fuel solutions require expensive modifications to engines, storage systems, and supply chains before they can be adopted at scale.

Kvasir’s biofuel is designed to function as a direct replacement for conventional marine fuels, allowing shipping operators to reduce emissions without undertaking major infrastructure investments.

This compatibility significantly lowers barriers to adoption and makes the technology particularly attractive for an industry characterised by long vessel lifecycles and substantial capital commitments.

By providing a climate neutral fuel that works within existing systems, the company aims to simplify and accelerate the maritime sector’s transition away from fossil fuels.

Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Commercialisation

A key component of the funding announcement is the formation of KVEEN Biofuels, a joint venture between Kvasir Technologies and European Energy.

The partnership combines Kvasir’s proprietary fuel production technology with European Energy’s expertise in large scale energy projects and infrastructure development.

Together, the companies plan to establish a commercial production facility capable of demonstrating the technology at industrial scale.

The collaboration is expected to accelerate market adoption while strengthening the commercial pathway for renewable marine fuels across Europe and beyond.

Scaling Production Capacity

The newly raised capital will be used to support the next stage of technological development and operational expansion.

Part of the investment will be directed toward expanding activities at the company’s test facility in Fredericia.

The site currently has the capacity to produce up to two tonnes of biofuel per day and serves as an important platform for validating and optimising production processes.

At the same time, preparations are underway for the construction of the company’s first commercial scale facility in Aabenraa, located in southern Jutland.

This plant will represent a major step forward in demonstrating the technology’s ability to operate efficiently at industrial scale.

Supporting the Future of Green Shipping

As shipping companies seek practical solutions to meet ambitious climate targets, renewable fuels are expected to play a central role in the sector’s transformation.

Kvasir Technologies believes its technology offers a viable route to reducing emissions while leveraging existing infrastructure and abundant renewable feedstocks.

With fresh funding, strong strategic backing, and plans for commercial scale deployment, the company is positioning itself as an important player in the future of sustainable maritime energy. By turning agricultural and forestry residues into climate neutral fuel, Kvasir Technologies is working to help accelerate the transition toward cleaner and more resilient global shipping operations.
