iFAST Diagnostics Secures Fresh Funding to Accelerate Rapid AST Deployment Across Hospitals

Antimicrobial resistance is becoming one of the most serious global healthcare threats, placing growing pressure on hospitals, healthcare systems, and clinicians worldwide. As bacteria increasingly evolve resistance to antibiotics, doctors face a critical race against time when treating infections such as sepsis and urinary tract infections. One of the biggest challenges is the slow speed of conventional antimicrobial susceptibility testing, where laboratories often require more than 40 hours to determine which antibiotics will effectively treat a patient’s infection. UK biotechnology company iFAST Diagnostics is developing rapid testing technology designed to dramatically shorten that process, helping clinicians deliver targeted treatment faster while reducing unnecessary antibiotic use.

iFAST Diagnostics has now secured £5 million in funding to accelerate commercial expansion and regulatory development.

The funding round was led by Meridian Health Ventures, with continued participation from existing investors including QantX, RAW Ventures, OKG Capital, and members of Cambridge Capital Group.

The round also included £2.1 million in non dilutive loan funding from Innovate UK.

According to the company, the oversubscribed financing values iFAST Diagnostics at almost five times its valuation from the previous funding round completed just 18 months ago, bringing total investment raised to £12 million.

Addressing a Growing Global Healthcare Challenge

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, commonly known as AST, plays a critical role in determining which antibiotics can successfully treat bacterial infections.

However, conventional laboratory testing processes remain relatively slow, often delaying targeted treatment decisions.

iFAST Diagnostics is focused on addressing this challenge through rapid AST technology capable of delivering results in under three hours from a positive blood bottle and within approximately three to four hours from raw urine samples.

The company believes this speed could significantly improve patient outcomes while helping slow the spread of antimicrobial resistance by reducing the unnecessary or ineffective use of antibiotics.

Faster Testing for Critical Care

Rapid diagnosis is particularly important in severe infections such as sepsis, where every hour of delayed treatment can increase mortality risk.

By accelerating susceptibility testing, iFAST aims to help clinicians identify effective antibiotics much earlier in the treatment process.

Tim Irish described antimicrobial resistance as one of the defining public health challenges of the current generation.

According to Irish, iFAST’s rapid AST system represents a major innovation because it delivers susceptibility testing results in less than three hours compared with current standard testing processes that can take more than 40 hours.

He added that the technology has the potential to improve clinical practice, reduce healthcare costs, and help slow the spread of antimicrobial resistance globally.

Expanding Commercial Rollout

Toby King said the latest investment reflects strong confidence from investors in the company’s mission to address the urgent need for rapid and affordable antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

King noted that the funding marks an important milestone for the company only three years after its founding.

The company is already placing its systems within hospital laboratories across the United Kingdom as part of its commercial rollout strategy.

Preparing for International Expansion

The newly secured funding will support expansion of iFAST’s UK deployment efforts while helping advance regulatory approval processes internationally.

The company plans to pursue European Union approval alongside accelerating its clinical and regulatory programme aimed at securing future approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.

As antimicrobial resistance continues rising globally, technologies capable of delivering faster and more accurate infection diagnostics are becoming an increasingly important part of the future healthcare infrastructure.

iFAST Diagnostics is positioning itself within that transition by developing rapid testing systems designed to help hospitals move from broad antibiotic use toward faster, more targeted, and data driven treatment decisions.
