From Shared Roofs to Shared Power: VREY Secures €3.3M to Bring Solar to Every Apartment Block

Across Europe, millions of rooftops sit unused while demand for clean, affordable energy continues to rise. The challenge is not technology but complexity, especially in multi family buildings where shared ownership and regulation have slowed solar adoption. VREY is aiming to change that, securing €3.3 million in seed funding to simplify how solar energy is deployed and shared among tenants.

Investor Backing for Scalable Energy Solutions

The funding round was led by Rubio Impact Ventures, with participation from High-Tech Gründerfonds and Kopa Ventures.

This investment will enable VREY to expand its team and further develop its platform, supporting its ambition to scale solar adoption across multi family housing in Germany and beyond.

The Untapped Potential of Shared Rooftops

Nearly half of Europe’s population lives in buildings with shared roofs, yet solar adoption in this segment remains extremely low. In Germany, fewer than two percent of multi family rental units currently use on site solar systems.

The primary barrier has been regulatory complexity. Traditionally, property owners who wanted to distribute solar energy to tenants were required to take on the role of energy suppliers, a responsibility that comes with significant legal and administrative burdens.

A New Regulatory Opportunity

Recent regulatory changes in Germany have introduced a new framework designed to address these challenges. Known as “Gemeinschaftliche Gebäudeversorgung,” this model removes the requirement for property owners to act as energy suppliers, making it easier to implement shared solar solutions.

VREY’s platform is built specifically to operationalise this framework, translating regulatory changes into practical, scalable solutions for property owners and tenants.

Simplifying Solar for Multi Family Buildings

VREY provides an integrated system that handles the technical and administrative aspects of shared solar energy. As a certified smart metering operator and billing partner, the company measures each tenant’s share of solar production and manages billing directly.

This approach eliminates the need for property owners to navigate complex supplier responsibilities while allowing tenants to benefit from locally generated energy without changing their existing providers.

Beyond Solar: A Comprehensive Energy Platform

While solar distribution is at the core of its offering, VREY is positioning itself as a broader energy management platform. Its solution supports the integration of additional technologies such as battery storage, heat pumps, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

By bringing these elements together, the company is creating what it describes as an EnergyOS for multi family buildings, a central system for measuring, managing, and optimising energy flows.

Growing Adoption Across Germany

VREY is already gaining traction, managing a growing portfolio of projects across all 16 German federal states. Its customers include private landlords, housing cooperatives, project developers, and large real estate companies.

The company collaborates with installation partners selected by its clients, ensuring flexibility while maintaining a consistent platform experience.

Enabling the Energy Transition at Scale

With the new funding, VREY plans to expand its team and enhance its technology to support additional energy use cases. The goal is to make sustainable energy solutions more accessible and economically viable for a wider range of property owners.

As Europe continues to push toward decarbonisation, unlocking the potential of multi family buildings will be critical. VREY’s approach addresses one of the most significant gaps in the energy transition, enabling shared access to renewable power in a way that is both practical and scalable.

A New Model for Urban Energy

By removing barriers and simplifying deployment, VREY is helping transform how energy is produced and consumed in urban environments. Its platform empowers property owners to future proof their buildings while giving tenants access to cleaner and more affordable electricity.

With strong investor support and a clear focus on innovation, VREY is laying the groundwork for a more decentralised and inclusive energy system, where every rooftop can contribute to a sustainable future.
