Stability AI is betting that the next phase of generative artificial intelligence will be shaped not only by bigger models, but by deeper partnerships with the companies that own some of the world’s most valuable creative content. The London founded company behind Stable Diffusion has raised $76 million in a Series B round backed by major music groups, gaming companies and existing technology investors as it shifts its strategy further toward professional creative applications.

Music Industry Steps Into AI

The latest financing brings three of the biggest names in global music into Stability AI’s investor base. Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group participated in the round alongside Electronic Arts, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.

Existing investors Coatue and Greycroft also joined the financing, along with former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Napster co founder Sean Parker. Parker is a member of Stability AI’s board, which also includes filmmaker James Cameron.

The company said the new capital will support creative production and research as it develops AI products targeted at professional users across music, gaming and entertainment.

From Stable Diffusion to Creative AI

Founded in London in 2019, Stability AI became one of the best known names in generative AI through Stable Diffusion, its text to image model that helped accelerate the development of open generative image technology.

The company has since broadened its ambitions beyond image generation. Stability AI now describes itself as a provider of purpose built AI products for professional creatives, with its technology spanning areas such as music, gaming and entertainment.

The company’s growing focus on creative industries is reflected in its partnerships with major rights holders. Stability AI has struck agreements with Warner Music Group and Electronic Arts to develop AI models using their catalogues and intellectual property.

These relationships give Stability AI access to significant creative assets while allowing music and entertainment companies to participate more directly in the development of generative AI technologies.

A Major Shift to the US

The fundraising also comes during a significant transformation for Stability AI itself. Although the company was founded in London, it has closed its London office and shifted its primary focus to the United States.

The company now operates from Los Angeles, placing it closer to the entertainment and creative industries it increasingly aims to serve.

The move marks a notable change for a startup that was once closely associated with the UK’s rapidly developing AI ecosystem.

New Leadership, New Direction

The latest investment brings Stability AI’s total funding to $232 million, including equity financing and convertible notes.

The company’s current strategy has been shaped under CEO Prem Akkaraju, who took the position in June 2024. He replaced founder and former CEO Emad Mostaque following a turbulent period that included employee departures, internal disputes and legal challenges.

Under Akkaraju, Stability AI has increasingly focused on building commercial relationships and developing specialised AI products for creative professionals.

The company has also continued expanding its model portfolio. Earlier this year, it released new AI systems including a model capable of generating professional grade music lasting more than six minutes.

Betting on Licensed Creative Data

The involvement of Sony Music Group, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group could prove particularly significant as generative AI companies face growing questions around copyright, licensing and the use of creative works for model development.

Rather than relying solely on publicly available material, partnerships with major rights holders could provide a route toward developing AI systems around licensed catalogues and commercially relevant intellectual property.

For Stability AI, the latest funding therefore represents more than another capital injection. It strengthens the company’s position at the intersection of AI, music, gaming and entertainment while giving it strategic relationships with some of the industries most affected by generative technology.

Akkaraju said the investors bring not only capital but also expertise, credibility and direct connections to artists, reinforcing Stability AI’s strategy of building AI tools alongside the creative industries they are designed to serve.
