As artificial intelligence moves from experimentation into critical infrastructure, European organisations are facing a new reality. Data sovereignty, regulatory compliance and geopolitical uncertainty are reshaping how AI systems are built and deployed. Against this backdrop, Swedish startup Berget AI has raised €2.1 million (SEK 24 million) to develop a full stack AI platform designed to keep sensitive data within national borders while remaining accessible to developers.
Building AI on sovereign foundations
Founded by digital entrepreneur and activist Christian Landgren and former Boston Consulting Group AI specialist Andreas Lundmark, Berget AI is developing a service that allows organisations to build AI applications using open language models running on sovereign infrastructure located in Sweden. The approach ensures that data remains under European jurisdiction and does not leave the country during processing.
The company positions itself as a practical alternative to US hyperscalers and complex on premise solutions. Its platform targets development teams that want to move quickly without taking on the operational burden of managing AI infrastructure themselves.
A turnkey platform for regulated environments
Berget AI delivers a full stack AI platform that combines ease of use with local data control and open technologies. By handling infrastructure, operations and model deployment, the service enables organisations to focus on application development while retaining sovereignty over data and workflows.
According to co founder Andreas Lundmark, demand for alternatives to global cloud providers is growing rapidly.
More and more organisations are uncomfortable placing sensitive data in global cloud platforms. We offer an accessible alternative that provides full control without requiring customers to build and operate their own infrastructure, Lundmark said.
Early traction and growing demand
The company launched its first service shortly before summer 2025 and has already seen strong interest from customers, particularly those in regulated sectors and the public sector. While Berget AI has not yet actively pushed sales, inbound demand has validated the company’s core thesis.
We see that this is a very real market need and that sovereignty is high on the agenda in Sweden and across Europe. Now is the time to accelerate and meet the demand we are experiencing. Several new services are currently under development, the company said.
Regulation reshapes the AI landscape
The timing of the funding round aligns closely with major regulatory changes across Europe. The EU AI Act introduces stricter requirements around transparency, traceability and data governance, particularly for high risk AI systems. As a result, public institutions and regulated industries are increasingly looking for solutions that ensure data and models remain within EU jurisdiction.
Christian Landgren, co-founder of Berget AI, believes sovereignty is no longer a theoretical concern.
Sovereignty is moving from a policy discussion to a concrete requirement for development teams. Our platform is built for this reality, local operations, open models and technical control from day one, he said.
Investor confidence in sovereign AI
The funding round was led by Luminar Ventures, with participation from Wellstreet and Norrsken Evolve. Investors point to a structural gap in Europe’s AI ecosystem as a key driver behind the investment.
Berget AI addresses a fundamental problem in Europe’s AI landscape, the lack of sovereign and scalable infrastructure. The team combines strong technical expertise with excellent timing, said Jacob Key, General Partner at Luminar Ventures.
Rebecca Löthman Rydå, General Partner at Norrsken Evolve, added that open and sustainable AI infrastructure will be essential for Europe’s long term resilience.
Scaling product and sales
Berget AI plans to use the newly raised capital to accelerate product development and scale its sales operations. As regulatory pressure increases and organisations rethink their dependence on global cloud providers, the company aims to establish itself as a foundational layer for sovereign AI development in Europe.
With AI becoming embedded in critical systems across society, Berget AI is betting that control, openness and locality will define the next phase of Europe’s AI infrastructure.
