Aardaia has raised €5 million in a seed funding round led by Point Nine, with participation from existing investor FoodLabs alongside new investors Astanor, Grey Silo, and a group of angel investors.
The investment will support expansion of the company’s breeding platform while accelerating development of its first commercial crop.
Building New Crops From Wild Plants
Founded in 2025 by Pádraic Flood and Mike Henske, Aardaia is developing a breeding platform designed to identify and domesticate wild plant species.
Rather than modifying existing crops through genetic engineering or gene editing, the company works with naturally occurring plant diversity to create entirely new agricultural products.
Its approach combines whole genome sequencing, computational biology, and advanced phenotyping to evaluate plant characteristics and predict agricultural performance.
By using modern biological analysis, Aardaia aims to dramatically reduce the time required to develop commercially viable crops.
Accelerating Plant Breeding Through Data
The company’s breeding platform analyses large numbers of plant genotypes to identify combinations with desirable agricultural traits.
Computational tools enable researchers to evaluate potential performance before lengthy field testing, allowing breeding programmes to progress more efficiently.
According to Aardaia, the platform can assess significantly larger genetic populations than many conventional breeding approaches.
The company expects to screen approximately seven hundred and fifty thousand unique aardaker genotypes this year and plans to increase this figure to around two million using the newly secured funding.
This expanded capacity is expected to accelerate both research and commercial development.
Introducing the Aardaker
Aardaia’s first product is the aardaker, a protein rich tuber developed to combine characteristics traditionally found across different crop families.
The company aims to deliver the productivity associated with root crops together with the nitrogen fixing capabilities commonly found in legumes.
Because the crop naturally fixes nitrogen, it has the potential to reduce dependence on synthetic nitrogen fertilisers while lowering environmental impact.
The aardaker has also been designed to support more sustainable domestic protein production by reducing reliance on imported protein crops.
