Europe’s transition to renewable energy is accelerating as governments and industries continue investing heavily in wind power to reduce carbon emissions and strengthen energy security. While wind turbines play a central role in this transformation, the industry faces an important sustainability challenge that extends beyond electricity generation. Conventional wind turbine blades are largely manufactured from fibreglass composites that are difficult to recycle at the end of their operating lives, creating growing environmental concerns as older turbines are decommissioned. German climate technology company Voodin Blade Technology is developing an alternative designed to make wind energy more sustainable, and the company has now secured significant European Union support to bring its technology to industrial scale.
Voodin Blade Technology and its project partners have been awarded a €48.18 million grant from the European Union Innovation Fund for the Voodin Blade 1st Factory project.
The consortium includes Lithuania’s VMG Wood Invest and VMG Technics alongside Germany’s Voodin Blade Technology and Anker Tec.
The funding will support the construction of the world’s first industrial facility dedicated to producing fully recyclable wind turbine blades manufactured from Laminated Veneer Lumber instead of conventional composite materials.
Replacing Fibreglass With Engineered Wood
Most wind turbine blades currently in operation are produced using fibreglass composites.
Although these materials provide strength and durability, recycling them remains extremely challenging, resulting in large numbers of decommissioned blades being sent to landfill.
Voodin Blade Technology has developed an alternative manufacturing approach that replaces traditional composite materials with engineered wood known as Laminated Veneer Lumber.
The company believes this renewable material can deliver the structural performance required for wind energy while significantly improving recyclability and reducing environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle.
The innovation supports broader efforts to create a more circular renewable energy industry.
A New Manufacturing Approach
Beyond developing new materials, Voodin has also redesigned how wind turbine blades are manufactured.
Its proprietary production system uses a fully automated and mold free manufacturing process.
Unlike conventional blade factories that require expensive molds and specialised production facilities, the company’s technology enables flexible manufacturing without extensive retooling for different blade designs.
The process also operates within a fully electric production environment, supporting lower emissions during manufacturing while reducing dependence on highly specialised labour.
According to the company, this approach allows blade production to be established much closer to where wind energy projects are being developed.
Building Europe’s First Factory
The Voodin Blade 1st Factory will be established in Navarre, Spain.
Scheduled to begin operations in 2031, the facility will become the first automated mold free wind turbine blade factory of its kind.
At full production capacity, the plant is expected to manufacture up to 160 sets of blades each year.
These blades will support wind turbines capable of generating approximately 13.5 million megawatt hours of electricity over a ten year period.
The project is also expected to create around 450 local jobs while strengthening European manufacturing capabilities for renewable energy technologies.
Strengthening Sustainable Supply Chains
A key objective of the project is establishing an entirely European supply chain for recyclable wind turbine blades.
The initiative supports broader European goals including the European Green Deal, the Net Zero Industry Act, and REPowerEU by reducing dependence on overseas manufacturing while strengthening domestic industrial capabilities.
Because the production system is designed for replication, the factory model can also be licensed and deployed in other regions around the world.
This flexibility enables countries to establish local manufacturing capacity while reducing transportation requirements and improving supply chain resilience.

As demand for renewable electricity continues growing worldwide, ensuring that wind energy infrastructure is sustainable throughout its full lifecycle is becoming increasingly important.
