Complaion Raises €13.5 Million to Build Europe’s Compliance Platform for SMEs

For many small and medium sized businesses, winning a major customer or entering a new market can come with an unexpected challenge, proving that the company meets a growing list of certification and regulatory requirements. Italian startup Complaion is building a technology platform designed to make that process less time consuming and more manageable, and has now raised €13.5 million to accelerate its expansion across Europe.

The funding round was led by Eurazeo and Italian Founders Fund, with participation from Shapers, 2100 Ventures, Kfund, Sella Direct Ventures, Enzo Ventures, Vento, Ithaca, Eden Ventures and Vesper. The company plans to use the capital to expand its team, strengthen its technology and support international growth.

Turning Compliance Into a Digital Process

Founded in 2024 by CEO Edoardo Tarricone, COO Marco Cortinovis and CTO Alessandro Vaccarino, Complaion combines software with support from certified Lead Auditors and compliance specialists.

The company is targeting SMEs that often need certifications to work with larger enterprises, participate in tenders or meet regulatory requirements, but may not have dedicated compliance departments.

Complaion’s platform is designed to organise documentation, procedures, evidence, deadlines and audits in one system. Its website says the platform can automate up to 80% of the compliance process and help companies achieve certification significantly faster.

Covering Multiple Standards

Complaion’s offering covers a broad range of management standards and regulations. Its certification services include ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 27001 for information security and ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety. It also supports ISO 42001 for artificial intelligence management.

The platform also addresses regulatory requirements including GDPR, the NIS2 cybersecurity directive and the European Union’s AI Act.

For example, Complaion’s NIS2 service combines automated documentation and monitoring with support from certified Lead Auditors. The company says its platform can automate up to 80% of the NIS2 process, while helping organisations maintain compliance after the initial assessment.

Combining Software With Human Expertise

A central part of Complaion’s model is that technology does not replace compliance professionals. Instead, the company combines automation with specialists who guide customers through critical stages of certification.

Its platform tracks progress from gap analysis and control implementation through internal audits and final certification. Lead Auditors remain involved throughout the process, helping businesses identify missing documentation, prepare procedures and address compliance gaps.

The approach is designed to reduce the administrative burden associated with certification while maintaining the involvement of experienced professionals.

Moving Toward an All in One Platform

Complaion is also expanding beyond traditional ISO certification. Its broader service portfolio includes training, Data Protection Officer services, penetration testing and support for subsidised financing, alongside certifications and regulatory compliance.

The company aims to give SMEs access to capabilities that would otherwise require building an internal compliance function or working with several specialist providers.

This broader strategy reflects the increasing overlap between different compliance requirements. Complaion notes that frameworks such as ISO 27001, GDPR, NIS2 and DORA share areas including risk management, access controls and incident management, allowing businesses to build systems that address multiple obligations together.

Scaling Across Europe

The new €13.5 million investment will support hiring, product development, customer support and European expansion. Complaion says it wants to become a single compliance partner for SMEs as businesses face increasingly complex certification and regulatory requirements.

With its combination of software automation, continuous monitoring and specialist guidance, the company is positioning compliance as an ongoing business function rather than a one time exercise completed only before an audit.

The next phase will test how effectively Complaion can scale this model beyond Italy while maintaining the combination of technology and human expertise at the centre of its offering.
