StratX Raises $1.19M to Cut Landfill Methane Emissions With Nature Based Technology

Across many developing regions, thousands of uncovered landfill sites continuously release methane and other harmful gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming while creating serious public health and environmental risks for nearby communities. Climate technology startup StratX is working to change that through an innovative biological approach that transforms landfill sites into cleaner and more sustainable environments, and the company has now secured new funding to accelerate its deployment.

StratX has raised $1.19 million in a funding round led by Neglected Climate Opportunities, with participation from CarbonFix and an initial purchase commitment from Terraset.

The investment will support pilot projects and the deployment of the company’s landfill methane reduction technology across several regions in the Global South.

Tackling One of Climate’s Biggest Challenges

StratX focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions produced by uncovered landfills and waste disposal sites.

Many landfill locations across developing countries release large quantities of methane because they lack modern gas capture infrastructure.

Beyond their contribution to climate change, these sites also generate air pollution, contaminate surrounding water resources, and create conditions that can negatively affect public health.

The company aims to address these interconnected environmental challenges through an affordable and scalable solution that can be deployed without major infrastructure investments.

Nature Inspired Landfill Covers

At the centre of StratX’s technology is a proprietary landfill cover designed to naturally reduce methane emissions.

The system combines locally available soil and gravel with naturally occurring microorganisms that consume methane before it escapes into the atmosphere.

Instead of relying entirely on mechanical gas collection systems, the biological cover functions as a living ecosystem that continuously oxidises methane through natural microbial activity.

Because the materials are locally sourced, the solution is intended to remain cost effective while supporting deployment across a wide variety of landfill environments.

Generating Climate and Community Benefits

Alongside methane reduction, StratX has developed measurement technology that improves the accuracy of landfill gas monitoring.

More precise emissions data enables the company to generate high integrity carbon credits linked to verified methane reductions.

Its commercial model removes financial barriers for municipalities by installing landfill covers without upfront costs.

Revenue generated through carbon credit sales is then shared with landfill operators, host governments, and local communities, creating new economic opportunities while supporting environmental improvement.

This approach aims to transform ageing landfill sites from financial liabilities into sustainable revenue generating assets.

Expanding Across the Global South

The company is currently preparing pilot projects across multiple international locations.

Initial deployment activities are focused on sites under assessment in Tanzania, Colombia, and Chile, while additional expansion is planned throughout Asia, Africa, and South America.

StratX is working closely with local governments, landfill operators, and community representatives to ensure each installation delivers meaningful environmental and social benefits.

The pilot projects are expected to demonstrate both the technical effectiveness and commercial viability of the company’s model.
