As artificial intelligence moves beyond screens and software into robots, autonomous vehicles, defence systems and intelligent infrastructure, machines need a much richer understanding of the physical world around them. Vangrid is building technology aimed at providing that missing layer of real world information by turning everyday smartphones into a distributed network of spatial sensors. The Dutch startup has now raised $9 million in seed funding as it works to create continuously updated ground truth data for the next generation of physical AI systems.
Turning Smartphones Into a Global Sensor Network
Vangrid is developing a decentralised spatial intelligence network that uses the cameras and sensors already embedded in billions of smartphones.
Instead of relying entirely on specialised vehicles, dedicated mapping equipment or expensive capture fleets, the company enables ordinary smartphones to collect information about streets, buildings and surrounding environments.
The approach is designed to make high fidelity spatial data available at much greater scale and frequency. A contributor can capture an environment simply by moving through it, allowing previously uncaptured locations to become useful sources of structured spatial information.
Vangrid describes its infrastructure as a sovereign data rail for real time ground truth, supporting world models and autonomous systems.
Bridging Traditional Mapping and Crowdsourcing
Traditional mapping systems frequently depend on centrally managed fleets equipped with specialised hardware. Although these systems can generate high quality information, expanding coverage can require substantial capital, operational planning and time.
At the other end of the market are open crowdsourcing models, which can offer greater scale but may struggle to provide the verification, consistency and provenance required by enterprise customers.
Vangrid is attempting to combine the strengths of both approaches.
Its network allows contributors to participate through smartphones while providing customers with verified and provenance tracked spatial data. Contributors can also receive compensation for the information they generate.
The model means network expansion can happen through app adoption rather than the procurement and deployment of physical capture fleets.
Privacy Built Into the Data Pipeline
Privacy and data integrity are central to Vangrid’s infrastructure.
The company uses edge computation to process information directly on smartphones before data is transferred from the device. Faces and licence plates are blurred on device, helping protect personal information before the captured material enters the wider network.
Each capture is also verified onchain for provenance before reaching Vangrid’s enterprise spatial API.
The company says this combination of edge computed privacy and cryptographic verification allows customers to establish where data came from and maintain confidence in its integrity.
Vangrid’s official platform describes its infrastructure around several core components, including continuous ground truth, edge computed privacy, cryptographic provenance, multi view ingestion and an enterprise spatial API.
Targeting Defence and Autonomous Systems
The company is positioning its technology for applications where accurate and continuously refreshed information about physical environments is particularly important.
Its strategic focus includes sovereign defence, autonomous logistics, critical infrastructure and embodied AI.
Vangrid has signed memoranda of understanding with strategic data partners and is engaging organisations developing defence and robotics platforms. The company says transactions are already flowing through its network, providing early validation of both the contributor and customer sides of the platform.
The broader objective is to create a spatial intelligence layer capable of supplying machines with current information about dynamic environments rather than relying solely on static maps.
Scaling the Physical AI Infrastructure
According to CEO Robert Brighton, Vangrid aims to provide the perception infrastructure required for machines operating in complex human environments.
The company believes that as robots and autonomous systems become more capable, they will require continuously refreshed spatial information to understand changing streets, infrastructure and surroundings.
The new funding will be used to bootstrap and expand Vangrid’s distributed network, strengthen its edge computation pipeline and deepen partnerships with enterprise customers across defence and autonomous systems.
With its smartphone based approach, the company is seeking to transform spatial data collection from an expensive hardware operation into a continuously expanding digital network. Its long term ambition is to become a foundational perception layer for the emerging Physical AI economy.
