Europe’s startup ecosystem is attracting growing international attention, but securing the right early stage investment and building relationships across global technology markets remain critical challenges for founders. Swedish venture capital firm Creandum is strengthening its position in this landscape by closing its largest fund to date, a $750 million investment vehicle designed to support ambitious technology companies at the seed and Series A stages. The new fund also signals the firm’s growing interest in connecting European innovation with opportunities in the United States.
Fund VIII Becomes Creandum’s Largest Investment Vehicle
Creandum has closed Fund VIII at $750 million, surpassing its previous Fund VII, which raised €500 million, equivalent to approximately $560 million.
The latest fund represents a significant expansion of the firm’s investment capacity and reinforces its focus on identifying promising founders before their businesses reach maturity.
According to the firm, approximately half of Fund VIII’s capital will be allocated to new investments, while the remaining half will support follow on funding for existing portfolio companies. This approach allows Creandum to discover emerging businesses while maintaining its commitment to companies that demonstrate strong growth potential.
The fund has attracted capital from several institutional investors across the United States and Europe, although Creandum has not publicly disclosed their individual identities.
Focus on Seed and Series A Startups
Fund VIII will primarily target companies at the seed and Series A stages, when founders are developing products, establishing market demand and building their initial teams.
Creandum has built its reputation by backing technology companies early in their development. Its portfolio includes businesses such as Lovable, Klarna, Spotify, Black Forest Labs, Modal and Rillet.
These investments span areas including artificial intelligence, financial technology, software infrastructure and digital products.
With its new fund, Creandum intends to continue identifying founders building technology businesses with international ambitions. The strategy reflects its belief that early investment and long term relationships can help startups establish strong positions in competitive global markets.
San Francisco Expansion Strengthens US Connections
Alongside the fund announcement, Creandum has expanded its presence in San Francisco by opening a new office in the city. The firm has maintained a presence there since 2012, using the location to build relationships with founders, investors and technology companies in the American market.
The new office will work closely with Creandum’s existing teams in Stockholm, London and Berlin. This structure is intended to give founders access to a connected investment team across Europe and the United States.
The expansion comes as international capital becomes increasingly important to European technology companies. Creandum estimates that approximately half of the capital invested in European technology over the past year originated in the United States, while relatively little US technology funding came from European investors.
The firm believes its stronger American presence will help it support founders seeking international customers, investors and business opportunities.
A Stronger Bridge Between European and US Technology
Creandum’s expansion also reflects increasing competition among venture capital firms to identify promising European startups. US investors are becoming more active in the region, creating additional opportunities for founders while raising competition for early stage deals.
By combining its European investment network with its San Francisco presence, Creandum wants to offer founders a consistent partner as they expand across markets.
Founders Remain at the Centre of the Strategy
Staffan Helgesson, founder and partner at Creandum, said that after nearly 25 years in venture capital, his belief in the importance of backing exceptional founders has only strengthened.
He emphasised that Fund VIII will remain focused on identifying ambitious early stage entrepreneurs and supporting them from the beginning of their journeys.
With $750 million available for new investments and follow on rounds, Creandum is positioning Fund VIII as a major platform for backing the next generation of technology companies across Europe and the United States.
