As global industries push for stronger, lighter, and more efficient production methods, a UK based startup is addressing one of the biggest barriers to scaling advanced manufacturing technologies. StirLight has raised £1.25 million to commercialise its friction stir welding solutions and accelerate adoption across key industrial sectors.
Funding to Drive Industrial Adoption
The funding package includes more than £750,000 in pre seed investment from Haatch Ventures, British Business Bank, D2N2, and angel investors. This is complemented by approximately £500,000 in grant funding from Innovate UK and the Aerospace Technology Institute.
This combined support highlights strong confidence in StirLight’s potential to transform manufacturing processes in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defence, nuclear, and energy.
Advancing Friction Stir Welding
StirLight specialises in friction stir welding, an advanced technique that produces stronger and more consistent joints compared to traditional welding methods. Unlike conventional processes, it does not require filler materials or shielding gas and operates with significantly lower energy consumption.
These advantages make it particularly attractive for manufacturers seeking to improve productivity and reduce environmental impact while maintaining high quality standards.
Despite its benefits, wider adoption has been limited by a key challenge, verifying weld quality during production.
Solving the Quality Verification Challenge
To address this issue, StirLight has developed StirSense, a proprietary system that enables real time monitoring and quality assurance during the welding process.
The platform captures and analyses process specific data to detect anomalies as they occur, providing immediate insights into weld quality. It also generates traceable records for every joint, allowing manufacturers to maintain detailed documentation without relying on post production inspections.
This capability reduces the need for costly and time consuming testing after welding, enabling faster production cycles and greater confidence in output quality.
Supporting Industrial Efficiency and Workforce Challenges
The adoption of friction stir welding and real time monitoring technologies also addresses broader industry challenges. As skilled labour becomes increasingly scarce, manufacturers are seeking solutions that reduce reliance on manual expertise while maintaining precision and consistency.
By automating quality assurance and providing actionable insights, StirLight’s technology helps bridge this gap, enabling more efficient operations and supporting the transition to advanced manufacturing systems.
Building Momentum Across Key Sectors
Since beginning operations in March 2024, StirLight has already established a presence in sectors including aerospace, automotive, and nuclear. The company provides consulting services and contract manufacturing, working closely with research and development teams as well as production units.
This early traction demonstrates the practical value of its solutions and positions the company for further growth as demand for advanced manufacturing technologies increases.
Expanding Technology and Partnerships
The newly secured funding will be used to support pilot deployments of StirSense with industrial partners, expand the company’s engineering and data science teams, and continue developing its core technology platform.
StirLight is actively seeking collaborations with manufacturers across multiple industries to integrate real time quality assurance into their production processes. These partnerships are expected to play a key role in scaling the technology and demonstrating its impact in real world environments.
Shaping the Future of Manufacturing
Led by co founders Toby Savage Yu, Jeroen De Backer, and Dan Lord, the company is focused on redefining how advanced manufacturing technologies are deployed at scale.
By combining innovative welding techniques with real time data driven insights, StirLight aims to remove one of the key barriers to adoption and unlock new levels of efficiency and reliability.
As industries continue to modernise, solutions that integrate performance, sustainability, and quality assurance will become increasingly critical. StirLight’s approach positions it as a key contributor to the next generation of manufacturing innovation.
